We have a new mantra coming from our elected officials, saying “The government is broken.” These politicians are still doing the same things that got us into this problem. To become a true leader in America, they could start by shrinking the government and cutting the taxes that hold back all the Americans from becoming the best that they can be.
We can do these at the local and federal levels of government. Let’s take Ohio, were I live, for example. In the next year Ohio will face a 7 to 8 billion deficit. They can’t fund the schools, Police, and Fire departments without raising taxes in Ohio. The people and business that can leave the State do so without hesitation, leavening the rest with more taxes to pay.
It’s time that the States and Federal Government stop and look at itself as a business. If a business is bankrupt and the consumers are not willing or able to pay the higher sales price for faulty goods and services, it will close. The management has a few things it can do. One, it could cut the price of its product. Two, cut staff and pay roll. Three, close the doors and become part of history. This is where the local and Federal governments are today. They lived on projected income and high overhead. The consumer (the American people and businesses) have to take responsibility for their money because the government does not. The government prints more money and takes from a generation that has not started to work yet.
One of the first things that the government can do is take a 5% pay cut across the board, just like they tell the business they should do. Second, Ohio needs to put each school district on the same books, supply chain, and pay scale for teachers. The more of the same books and equipment you buy, the cheaper it gets. Third, merge all of the cities together that go to the same school district. Take Mayfield City school District, they have 4 cities that make up the district. If you merge all 4 cities together, you’d end up with one mayor, one Police chef, one Fire chef, one City Hall, and one council person per old city and with one at large, giving you five on city council. Fourth, the merger of all these cities would allow the counties to merge together. Once you merge counties together, you can draw a box around the county that surrounds Columbus and then make a line North, South, East and West from the center of the box. You would then have one State Senator and two State Representatives per new district lines. They would be the North West, South West, South East, North East and Columbus. These would take the State Senators from 33 to 5 and the State Representatives from 98 to 10. This would cut the Ohio budget in half. We the people of Ohio would not have to pay for their salaries, utilities for their offices, staff, and other things that our taxes go to.
Once we prove that it works in the States, we move it to the Federal Government. Shrinking the size of government will mean that all citizens of America will have to step up and become more involved in the way government is run. This is what our founding fathers made it to be. We the people, control the government, not the government controlling us.
